Blackjack for beginners: table rules, strategy and costly mistakes

Read the small print on the felt before sitting down, because a single line can double the cost.

The short version

In blackjack you beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 without going over. A table that pays 3 to 2 on a natural blackjack, combined with basic strategy, keeps the house edge near or under one per cent. A 6 to 5 table adds roughly 1.4 points of edge.

Few casino games reward knowing the rules as much as blackjack does. The difference between a good table and a bad one is printed on the screen, and most players never read it. We re-check every month, so keep the top Canadian casino sites handy.

Play only if you have reached the legal age in your province and keep the stake within your budget.

A hand in six steps

 1. You place a bet.
 2. You and the dealer get two cards, one of the dealer's hidden.
 3. Number cards count their value, face cards count 10, an ace counts 1 or 11.
 4. You hit, stand, double, split or surrender where allowed.
 5. The dealer draws to a fixed rule, usually standing on 17.
 6. Closest to 21 without busting wins.

A natural, ace plus a ten-value card, normally pays 3 to 2. On a CAD 20 bet that is CAD 30 profit. On a 6 to 5 table the same hand pays only CAD 24.

The payout line matters most. If a table shows 6 to 5, look for another table.

Basic strategy in a few lines

 • Always split aces and eights.
 • Never split tens or fives.
 • Stand on hard 17 or more.
 • Double on 11 against most dealer cards.
 • Decline insurance.

The full chart handles every hand. Use the blackjack strategy guide and practise in demo mode until the moves are automatic.

Side bets and counting

Perfect Pairs, 21+3 and similar extras pay big multiples and carry house edges of several per cent, sometimes above ten. If you try them, use a separate small stake.

Card counting is not practical online. RNG games reshuffle every hand, and live games often use continuous shuffling machines.

RNG or live, and what about bonuses?

RNG tables are quick and flexible. Live tables bring a real shoe and a calmer pace; see the live casino page. Blackjack usually counts for a small share of a bonus. Read the bonus terms before you plan a blackjack session around an offer.

Adults only. The legal age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Gambling carries real risk of loss. Set limits and stop when it stops being fun. This page is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice.

Common questions

What should a beginner do first?

Learn basic strategy, choose a table that pays 3 to 2, skip insurance and side bets, and fix a stake limit. No method guarantees a win, but this routine holds the cost near the lowest the rules allow. Start with demo hands, then move to small real stakes.

Is online blackjack honest?

At licensed operators, RNG software is tested and live games use real cards under camera. The odds match the published rules, but the house keeps a built-in edge. Check the licence first. The licence verification guide shows how to do that.

How much does 6 to 5 really cost me?

On a CAD 10 natural you receive CAD 12 instead of CAD 15, a CAD 3 shortfall each time. Across many hands this lifts the house edge by about 1.4 percentage points, which is huge when the strategy-based baseline is under one per cent. Switch tables if you see it.
