Limits, breaks and self-exclusion: set the guardrails before you play

These tools work best when chosen in a calm moment, long before a bad session tempts you to skip them.

The short version

You can control online play with deposit, loss and time limits, short breaks called time-outs, or self-exclusion lasting months or years. Ontario runs a central self-exclusion program through iGaming Ontario, and other operators have their own tools. Set limits before your first bet and ask support for help.

Control tools exist because stopping in the moment is hard for nearly everyone. A rule written in advance does the hard part for you. Still choosing? Our Canada casino shortlist lays out the options.

Each tool is explained below along with free help across Canada. Only adults who meet the age limit in their province should gamble.

A lower limit applies at once, while a higher one waits for a cooling-off period. Pick a number with the play budget planner.

Time-outs

A time-out locks the account for a fixed spell, usually a day to several weeks, and then you can return. It fits a rough session or a sense that play is creeping up.

Self-exclusion in practice

Self-exclusion bars you from a site or group of sites for a chosen period, from months to years. The operator closes the account, stops marketing and should refuse new sign-ups. Rules and durations vary by operator and province.

Ontario's iGaming Ontario has launched a central program, reported in 2026 as BetGuard, letting adults exclude from every regulated site with one registration. Confirm details and enrolment on the iGaming Ontario website. It does not reach offshore sites.

Outside Ontario and on offshore sites

Other provinces provide tools through platforms such as PlayNow and Espacejeux. Offshore casinos may offer self-exclusion that covers only that brand or group, with uneven enforcement. For a wider barrier, install blocking software, ask your bank about gambling transaction blocks and tell someone you trust.

After you exclude

Delete saved cards and apps, unsubscribe from marketing email and stay off other gambling sites. Exclusion is not a punishment but a pause to rebuild control, and many people pair it with counselling or peer support. If you feel the urge to get around it, call a helpline that same day.

Bringing in family and friends

Staying on track is easier when someone knows. You might share your limits with a trusted person, let them glance at statements, or agree a signal for moments of pressure. Relatives can also phone support services for advice without giving your name. Help exists for families as well as players.

Adults only. The legal age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Gambling carries real risk of loss. Set limits and stop when it stops being fun. This page is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice.

Common questions

Can I cancel self-exclusion early?

Generally not. Regulated programs hold you to the period you chose, then require a waiting time and sometimes a request to come back. That is deliberate. If unsure, start with a shorter period, but remember the barrier works because it is hard to undo.

Do my limits cover every casino I use?

No. Limits apply per operator unless you join a central program. If you play at several sites, set limits at each, or add blocking software. Track the total of all deposits so the combined figure stays inside the budget you fixed.

Will a helpline tell anyone?

No. Services like ConnexOntario and Gambling Support BC are free and confidential, and you need not give your name. Advisers discuss options without judgement, including treatment, support groups and self-exclusion, and can help you plan what to tell family or friends.
